Kerns Neighborhood Association - No August Meeting

Due to a busy event month, Kerns Neighborhood Association will not be meeting in August. Our next board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Pacific Crest Community School located at the corner of NE Davis and 29th Avenue. Join us for pizza and lively discussions about the happenings in the neighborhood.
The Kerns board is a friendly mix of neighbors, land owners and business owners coming together to address neighbor concerns and planning our annual events. Board meetings occur the third Wednesday of every month except for August and December. All neighbors, business and property owners are welcome.

Kerns Provides $5 Helmets at the Southeast Sunday Parkways

Kerns Neighborhood Association teamed up with Legacy Trauma Nurses Program to provide close to 150 helmets to the public for just $5 a piece.  Volunteers had a great time in the hot sun along SE Sunday Park route getting as many people as possible to buy an affordable helmet or upgrade to a newer, safer model.  If you are interested in a $5 helmet, please send an email to kernsna@gmail.com.  Offer available while supplies last.

Kerns Neighborhood Annual Picnic - National Night Out Fun

Kerns would like to extend a special thanks to all the volunteers and neighborhood vendors that helped make Kerns annual picnic a great success on National Night Out on August 3rd.  Hundreds of neighbors joined in the festivities for food, music, games for the kids, tastes of our neighborhood restaurants and community building.  For a complete list of contributers, please click HERE.

Buckman/Kerns Cleanup - A Big Success in April 2010

The Buckman/Kerns neighborhood cleanup was a great success due to a collaborative effort between neighbors, businesses and the city. Approximately 60 volunteers participated, collecting trash, wood and metal. Other materials were recycled and picked up by the city or other business, such as computers and electronics, batteries, tires, yard debris and styrofoam and foam packaging. City agencies pitched in, with the Portland Office of Planning and Sustainability providing over $1500 for expenses and SOLV offering on-site cleanup supplies. Cash and check donations were also collected, amounting to over $1000, with the Plaid Pantry and Bitar Company donating $100 each. Food donations were kindly supplied by neighborhood restaurants, which included Stark Naked Pizza, Old Wives’ Tales, Ole Ole, The Subway Shop, Michael’s Deli, Starbucks, Piece of Cake Bakery and Coca Cola Company. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this a memorable and impressive neighborhood event.

Portland Plan Phase III Workshops this Fall

The city of Portland wants your input for the Portland Plan which will be the city's road map for the next 25 years, guiding our direction as the city grows and changes. We face some real challenges, and our response to those challenges will create the Portland of 2035 — the city of our children and grandchildren. It will take a lot of collaboration and your good ideas!

Phase III workshops will begin this fall.  If you would like to be part of this planning process, please visit the Portland Plan website

Community Compost Bin

If anyone is collecting kitchen scraps and needs a place to compost them, there's now a community compost bin at the Northwest corner of NE 31st Ave and NE Couch St. Things like vegetable peelings, over ripe fruit and old leaves are fine, but no meat or overly smelly leftovers (to avoid attracting vermin). Thanks for composting!
